Upgrading Windows Server Standard to Windows Server Datacenter using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool is the fastest method to unlock unlimited Hyper-V virtual machine licensing, Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), and automated virtual machine activation (AVMA) without rebuilding the server or reinstalling software. Because Windows Server Standard and Datacenter share identical binary code trees, you can convert the running operating system in-place within five minutes by executing the command dism /online /set-edition:ServerDatacenter /productkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /accepteula, followed by a single server reboot to apply the new Datacenter licensing policies.

✅ One-Way Conversion: Upgrading from Standard to Datacenter is supported on-the-fly. However, downgrading from Datacenter back to Standard is not natively supported by DISM and requires an OS reinstall.

1. Why Upgrade from Standard to Datacenter?

Windows Server Standard limits virtual operating system environments (OSEs) to 2 virtual machines per licensed host. Windows Server Datacenter unlocks unlimited Hyper-V virtual machines, Storage Spaces Direct, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and Host Guardian Hyper-V shielding.

2. Step 1: Query Current Edition & Target Upgrades

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and inspect your current edition and valid upgrade paths:

// 1. Check current edition
dism /online /get-currentedition

// 2. Check available target upgrade editions
dism /online /get-targeteditions

The target editions output will clearly show: Target Edition : ServerDatacenter.

3. Step 2: Execute DISM Set-Edition Command

Run the online edition switch command with your genuine Datacenter retail product key:

// Execute in-place edition conversion
dism /online /set-edition:ServerDatacenter /productkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /accepteula

DISM will process the package registry (0% to 100%), which takes 2 to 4 minutes.

4. Step 3: Reboot and Verify Datacenter Entitlement

When prompted with “A restart is required to finish the operation. Do you want to restart the computer now? (Y/N)”, type Y. After rebooting, open Command Prompt and run:

slmgr /dlv

The description will now display: Windows(R) ServerDatacenter edition.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use DISM to upgrade if my server is an Active Directory Domain Controller?

No. Microsoft blocks DISM Set-Edition on active Domain Controllers. You must temporarily demote the DC, perform the DISM upgrade, and re-promote it to an Active Directory domain controller.
