Windows activation error 0x80041023 (accompanied by the message “The product key you entered doesn’t exist. Check the key and try again”) occurs when you attempt to activate Windows using a product key for an edition that does not match your currently installed Windows build, or when a pre-existing OEM key embedded in your motherboard’s UEFI BIOS conflicts with a new retail key. To resolve error 0x80041023, you must inspect your factory BIOS key using PowerShell, ensure your installed operating system edition matches your license key, and install the key via Command Prompt using slmgr /ipk or changepk.exe.

✅ Why the Message is Misleading: Despite the warning stating the key “does not exist,” the key is almost certainly authentic. Windows displays this error when you enter a Pro key on a machine running a Single-Language Home edition, or when entering a Windows 10/11 key with typographical character substitutions.

1. What Causes Error 0x80041023?

Computers manufactured by Dell, Lenovo, HP, or ASUS come with a product key embedded in the ACPI MSDM firmware table. If you perform a clean installation or try to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, Windows queries the motherboard, notices a discrepancy between the embedded OEM edition and the key you entered, and throws 0x80041023.

2. Step 1: Retrieve Your Motherboard OEM BIOS Key

To view the original product key tied to your hardware, open PowerShell as administrator and run:

(Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey

If a 25-character key is returned, your motherboard contains a factory license. If you are upgrading to Pro, you must force Windows to override this firmware key.

3. Step 2: Eliminate Common Typographical Errors

Microsoft product keys never contain the letters O, I, Z, U, or L, and never contain the digits 0 or 1 to prevent ambiguity. Ensure you haven’t mistyped:

  • Letter B mistaken for the number 8
  • Letter G mistaken for the number 6
  • Letter V mistaken for the letter Y

4. Step 3: Switch Editions via changepk.exe

If the Settings interface continues to error out, force the licensing subsystem to process the key directly using the native edition modifier:

// Run in elevated Command Prompt
changepk.exe /ProductKey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Windows 10 key activate Windows 11?

Yes. Microsoft treats Windows 10 and Windows 11 retail product keys interchangeably within the same edition tier (e.g., Windows 10 Pro activates Windows 11 Pro).
