If your PC is running slow, infected with malware, or you are simply upgrading your hard drive, a clean installation is the best solution. But what if you lost your product key? The good news is that you can easily reinstall Windows 11 without a product key by relying on a Digital License linked to your motherboard or Microsoft account.

In this guide, we will show you exactly how to verify your digital license and perform a clean installation without ever needing to type in a 25-character code.

1. What is a Windows 11 Digital License?

Unlike older versions of Windows where you had to manually type in a key from a sticker, Windows 11 uses a modern activation method called a Digital License (or Digital Entitlement).

When you first activate Windows 11, Microsoft takes a “digital fingerprint” of your computer’s motherboard and stores it on their activation servers. If you ever need to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows on that exact same motherboard, Microsoft’s servers will recognize your PC and activate it automatically.

💡 Pro Tip: If you are completely changing your motherboard, your digital fingerprint will change, and activation will fail. In that case, you must link your Windows license to your Microsoft account before making the hardware change, or purchase a new retail key.

2. Check Your Activation Status Before You Reinstall

Before you wipe your drive, you must verify that your PC currently has an active digital license. If your Windows is not activated right now, it will not magically activate after a reinstall!

  1. Click the Start button and open Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Go to System > Activation.
  3. Look at the Activation state.
  4. It must say: “Windows is activated with a digital license” or “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.”

If it says this, you are 100% safe to format your drive and reinstall.

3. How to Reinstall Windows 11 Without the Key

Once you are ready to reinstall, follow these steps during the Windows Setup process:

  1. Boot your PC from your Windows 11 installation USB drive.
  2. Select your language, time, and keyboard layout, then click Next and Install Now.
  3. The Critical Step: A screen will appear asking you to “Enter the product key to activate Windows.” Look at the bottom of this screen and click the small text that says “I don’t have a product key”.
  4. Select the exact edition of Windows 11 you previously had installed (e.g., Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro). Note: If you select the wrong edition, it will not activate!
  5. Complete the installation process normally.

4. Automatic Activation Upon Boot

Once Windows 11 finishes installing and you reach the desktop, all you need to do is connect your computer to the internet (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).

In the background, Windows will securely contact Microsoft’s activation servers, verify your motherboard’s digital fingerprint, and activate your operating system instantly. You can confirm this by checking the Activation page in Settings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I am changing my motherboard?

A standard digital license is tied to your motherboard. If you replace the motherboard, you will lose activation. You must use a Retail license (not OEM) and link it to your Microsoft account to transfer it to new hardware.

Can I use a third-party tool to find my key before reinstalling?

Yes. If you prefer to have the key written down just in case, you can use Command Prompt or third-party software. Read our guide on 5 easy methods to find your Windows product key.

I clicked “I don’t have a product key,” but Windows didn’t activate. Why?

The most common reasons are: 1) You have no internet connection, 2) You installed the wrong edition (e.g., you had Home but installed Pro), or 3) Your PC was never genuinely activated in the first place.
