The error message “We’re sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?” occurs when Microsoft Word encounters a severe startup crash. In over 85% of occurrences, clicking the “Repair Now” button does nothing because the dialog simply closes Word without executing any actual repair routine. This fault is triggered by corrupted third-party COM add-ins (such as Adobe PDF plugins, grammar checkers, or antivirus extensions), a damaged global template (Normal.dotm), or outdated Click-to-Run binaries. You can resolve this issue permanently by opening Word in Safe Mode (winword /safe), unchecking culprit COM add-ins, or executing an official Quick Repair via Windows Settings.

✅ Why “Repair Now” Fails: The in-app button is an unhandled exception handler that attempts to invoke the Windows Installer service. Because modern Office uses Click-to-Run virtualization, this button cannot trigger an automated fix.

1. Step 1: Launch Word in Safe Mode (winword /safe)

Safe Mode starts Word without loading third-party add-ins, custom toolbars, or template macros:

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type winword /safe and press Enter.
  3. If Word opens smoothly with (Safe Mode) in the title bar, the crash is 100% confirmed to be caused by a third-party add-in.

2. Step 2: Disable Problematic COM Add-Ins

While inside Word Safe Mode, disable the offending extensions:

  1. Click File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. At the bottom, set the Manage dropdown to COM Add-ins and click Go….
  3. Uncheck all third-party plugins (especially Acrobat PDF, Abbyy FineReader, or Send to Bluetooth). Click OK.
  4. Close Word and relaunch it normally.

3. Step 3: Run Windows Settings Quick Repair

If Safe Mode does not open, repair the underlying Microsoft Office binaries via Windows Settings:

  1. Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Locate Microsoft Office (or Microsoft 365), click the three dots, and choose Modify.
  4. Select Quick Repair and click Repair (takes ~2 minutes).
  5. If Quick Repair does not fix it, choose Online Repair for a complete replacement of all Office binaries.

4. Step 4: Reset the Corrupted Normal.dotm Template

Word stores global styles and defaults in Normal.dotm. When corrupted, Word crashes on launch:

// In Windows Run dialog (Win + R), paste:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates

// Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old

When you relaunch Word, it will automatically generate a brand-new, uncorrupted default template.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Will Quick Repair delete my custom Word documents?

No. Quick Repair only checks and replaces damaged program files in Program Files. It never touches your user documents or templates.
